The Rain Barrels Are Coming!

    The Rain Barrels Are Coming!

WEDNESDAY, MAY 18
ADRIENNE CLARKSON ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
$55 per barrel
colours available: black or grey
Reserve your Barrel at rainbarrel.ca

The ECOSCHOOL Team is pleased to announce that we are partnering with RainBarrel.ca to host a rain barrel sale. As you know the students of Adrienne Clarkson Elementary School have been very involved in improving their school yard over the past 3 years.  Last Spring we had 18 new shade trees and evergreens installed in our yard.  The area water ban puts these new trees at risk. The only feasible way to get them watered is for a truck to do it for us, at least twice over the summer months. Our hopes in hosting this sale are that we can help keep our community green during our summer of the water ban, promote conservation practices, and have a successful fundraiser to take care of our trees all at the same time.  $10 from the sale of every barrel will go directly to ACES for our school yard improvements and maintenance.

More information on reserving your rain barrel will be posted soon on rainbarrel.ca.  If you have questions or would like to volunteer to help, please contact Sonja at 613-440-1202 or sonjaenater@gmail.com.

Spread the word!

Student Surveys

Yesterday, students were given their OCDSB Student Survey.  This is a voluntary survey which is being distributed to every student in the school district. Parents of students in JK to grade 6 are asked to complete the survey with your child, place it in the return envelope provided, and return it to the school no later than May 20th, 2011.  If you prefer, you may complete the survey on-line at http://www.ocdsb.ca/ .  You will need your child's unique survey code which does not include the student's name or Ontario Education Number (OEN).

Thanks for taking the time to help the board better serve our students.

Project Presentation Day

On Friday, students brought in their completed First Nations and Ancient Civilization projects.  We invited classes to come to our fair and students shared their information with others. The projects will be marked shortly and rubrics will be returned to the students.
During the day students ate bannock with maple syrup, made aboriginal inspired friendship bracelets and Egyptian mummys.  We ended the day by piling into the "wigwam".

Overall, the day was a celebration of historic events and activities!-

Scandal at the Summer Home!

Although spending the summer in such a beautiful place is usually relaxing....something terrible happened this past summer. Scandal hit Blair Castle!  A guest was kicked out of the home because of their behaviour and you should hear the tales that are being spun!  Coming soon -- what actually happened to the guest?

Farewell!

We have had the privilege of having 3 Korean students spend the month of January with our class.
The students enjoyed getting to know Amy, Jane and Justin. They especially enjoyed helping them develop their English speaking skills. Today classes joined together in a small farewell ceremony where all 15 visiting students received special gifts from ACES.  Amy, Jane and Justin went home with a picture frame with our class photo adorned with student signatures.  Special thanks to Lissy and Katie for designing the photo mats.
Saying farewell to our friends.

HELMETS

Please be sure to bring a helmet on Mondays and Thursdays so that we can participate in sledding and skating during outdoor gym.
Bicycle helmets are no longer accepted as safe winter activity gear as they often do not fit correctly when placed over a hat.  Many sports stores are running sales at the moment and you can find ski or hockey helmets for around $35.  Also check "Play it Again Sports" or similar facilities if you'd like to pick up a used helmet for less.
The class will be sledding on Mondays and skating on Thursdays.  Sledding will begin this coming Monday and we will need to wait for the skating rink to open before we can skate.

We're looking forward to a safe and happy outdoor winter season!

Happy New Year!

Welcome back to class!  I trust that everyone had a safe and relaxing holiday.
We are joined today by 4 new grade 5 students.  Malika has come from the United States and, for the month of January, we are honoured to be visited by 3 Korean students. Everyone has been working hard today to make the transition for our new students a comfortable and welcoming one!
